Life-saving Resources

Sept. 24, 2018

Dear Longhorns,

Classes have been underway for a month, and I wanted to check in. I hope you are having a successful semester so far, finding your way to the proper buildings, meeting new people and making friends, taking thought-provoking classes, and enjoying the independence college brings. You are in the early stages of living the Longhorn life!

I know that being a university student can bring laughter and also stress at times. Every student experiences difficult times at points during their time on campus. The good news is that we are aware that “life” happens and have resources to help you or a friend.

I’d like to share a short video that covers the warning signs when someone is in distress. You’ll learn what a crisis can look like and what you can do to help. It is important to know what to do if you, a friend or a classmate are having challenges that include thoughts of causing harm to yourself or others. If this happens, please ask for help. We are here to go through this with you.

  • If you are experiencing a mental health crisis, the Counseling and Mental Health Center Crisis Line is available 24 hours a day, every day, at (512) 471-2255.
  • If you are concerned about someone else’s behavior, contact the Behavior Concerns Advice Line (BCAL) at (512) 232-5050.
  • If you or someone around you is in immediate danger, contact UTPD at 911.
  • If you are experiencing a personal emergency including but not limited to family, housing, academics or finances, contact Student Emergency Services at (512) 471-5017.
  • If you would like more information about suicide prevention, I encourage you to attend the annual UT Austin Suicide Prevention Week, Sept. 24-28.

Please add these numbers to your contacts for quick retrieval. Remember that Longhorns take care of each other. We are a community that is poised to change the world because of the courage we share to look out for one another.

Hook ‘em,

Soncia Reagins-Lilly

Your Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students
