Our Experts Leading the Way

Find out who is being positioned as experts in their fields with our academic partners and new national colleagues visiting our campus.

Kelli Bradley (Disability and Access) and Emily Shryock (Disability Cultural Center) presented at the Early Career Faculty Event to introduce new and early career faculty to accessibility resources.

James Butler and Thea Woodruff (Longhorn Wellness Center) partnered with the Center for Teaching and Learning on “Integrating Mindfulness into the Classroom.” They shared mindfulness techniques with faculty members to help students reduce stress, and improve memory and testing performance.

Recreational Sports hosted the annual Southeastern Conference Recreation Directors Meeting, Sept. 16-18. Recreation directors gathered on the Forty Acres to share updates, discuss industry trends and topics and participate in a variety of workshop sessions. Randall Ford, Genevieve Nhan and Jennifer Speer (Recreational Sports) co-presented on the department’s corporate initiatives, and Facility Operations staff led tours of all RecSports facilities.

Erin Garcia and Laura Kinch (Counseling and Mental Health Center, Longhorn Wellness Center and University Health Services) presented to 850 families during eight Family Orientation sessions. They provided information on health and well-being programs, spaces and resources.

Jennifer Speer (Recreational Sports) was featured in The Final Exam section of the September/October issue of Campus Rec Magazine. She discussed her 25-year career in the industry, highlights, challenges and campus recreation at UT Austin.

Several Healthyhorns staff members presented at the 2024 American College Health Association Annual Meeting, May 28-June 1:

  • Brittany Boyer and Susan Hochman (Counseling and Mental Health Center, Longhorn Wellness Center and University Health Services), with James Aluri (Johns Hopkins University) and Broderick Leaks (University of Southern California), presented the “Ethical Considerations of Mental Health Screening in Postsecondary Students.”
  • Boyer also received the Advancing Health Equity Award for her poster presentation: “Do In-House and Third-Party Tele-Counseling Services Extend Our Reach to Underserved, Treatment-Naïve Student Populations?”
