Wise Words from the VP, Sept. 2019

Sept. 3, 2019

It is hard to believe as our hot Texas weather continues, but it’s time to welcome a new academic year! I hope this summer you had the opportunity to rest and renew, because the fall semester is upon us. I want to express my sincere appreciation to those of you involved in Freshman, Transfer and Family Orientations over the summer. Thank you for a job well done getting our students into a Longhorn State of Mind and setting them up for success.

Now, our focus is to transition our students into living the Longhorn life™ by welcoming them to campus, introducing them to our traditions, and connecting them with our many resources and opportunities. During Longhorn Welcome, which kicked off on Aug. 23 with Mooov-In, we roll out the burnt orange carpet, so we encourage you to promote these fun and exciting opportunities to students. Longhorn Welcome events are designed so our students get to know the campus and engage with student life. Longhorn Welcome continues tomorrow with Party on the Plaza and concludes with the UT Women’s Soccer game on Sunday.

Another way to help new and returning students get involved is to encourage them to explore HornsLink, an online platform where our 1,100+ student organizations connect, share events, and post news. Using their own customizable interest inventory, students can identify organizations they want to explore and perhaps meet others with similar interests. Please also let students know that before they join any student organization, they should make sure the organization is registered on HornsLink and in good standing with the university.

Finally, we are launching our 2018-2019 Impact Report today and this year we’ve highlighted stories about outstanding students, award-winning staff and innovative programs. Underlying each of these stories is a simple idea: we are transforming the university. In ways big and small, every day, each of us influences the Longhorn life. The Impact Report is a testament to how our work enhances the student experience.

So, here’s to you and here’s to an awesome year—see you on Sept. 11 for our Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs Kickoff!

With gratitude,

Soncia Reagins-Lilly

Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students
